These apps are designed to meet prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send and receive messages and photos, eCards, video calls, and even money into their trust account at the prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are numerous federal inmate applications that provide additional services, such as video visits and phone calls.

The JPay app, for example, enables family and friends to pay money into an inmate's trust account, along with images, emails, eCards and video grams. They can also design personal postcards using their own photos. It's also a safer and more secure alternative to traditional postal mail.

Another popular texting app for prisoners is GettingOut. It text inmate provides "simple, efficient communication" between inmates with their loved family members. The app, available in certain correctional facilities, lets inmates upload photos and send messages to their family members and friends using their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 per message and loved ones pay for the information used to view their messages (but not for explicit pictures).
